About Beena Rao

Being a moral human.

Beena Rao-Barot was Born on 18/07/1971 in the Patan, Gujarat which is known for its famous World Heritage Site. Since Childhood Mrs. Beena Rao was much inspired by the great personalities like Ramkrishna Paramhans, Swami Vivekananda, Vinoba Bhave, Sister Nivedita etc., Their Selfless commitment towards society inspired her the most, Other than such great personalities she is also much inspired from her father YogeshBhai Barot who use to teach violin to blind children in his free time. Beena Rao has completed Graduation form Hemchandracharya North Gujarat University(HNGU) in B.Sc-Chemistry and Masters from Indira Gandhi National Open University(IGNOU),” Delhi” in Masters In Social Work(MSW).

After doing small social work initiatives in neighbouring slum establishments she finally decided to commit her whole life in upliftment of “Halpati” (ST) Community of South Gujarat who even after 73 years of our independence remained Underprivileged unlike other communities who were then given both Social & Educational Rights.

‘Getting Acceptance from these tribal community was the hardest thing Mrs. Beena could do in her whole life, at first she was often exposed to the offended slangs and Curse Words but her determination towards the upliftment of underprivileged society held her strong and now she tends to recognise herself more as one of “Halpati”. During her initial Journey she was often threatened to killed by antisocial elements like Bootleggers to not work in “Halpati” community but her selfless work & principal of “Ahimsa” by Mahatma Gandhi made the anti-social elements her fan. Now the situation is quite different, all the Bootleggers of Southern Gujarat calls Mrs. Beena with the title “Teacher” and they now consider Mrs. Beena as their Sister’.

From 2006 she started her work in “Halpati” (ST) Community of South Gujarat by imparting moral education. After many such initiatives she formally started “Prayas” Free Coaching Class in Surat and in nearby villages of Surat. Through “Prayas” free coaching Underprivileged kids were given free coaching of standard 1 st to 8 th so as to fill the void created by abysmal teaching standard in government schools. Through her active effort Drop-out rate of slum kids have reduced up-to 95%, even for those Drop-out slum students she makes sure that they enrol in ITI training and start working so that they can earn and live in this fast going society.

She has also presented Research Paper at National Seminar on the “Identity Crisis of Village Women”. "Prayas" Free coaching class which is currently running at 10 centres in Surat city itself and 10 centres in Villages of South Gujarat. Daily 800 Slum kids learn in “Prayas” free coaching class. Other than Free coaching she also started Mobile Laboratory, Mobile Library. Till now more than 10,000 slum Children have been benefited through this initiative making “Halpati” (ST) Community strong to compete with main stream society. As she always says

“Prayas for Better Tomorrow…”
